How to start doing British Dressage | Riding With Rhi
I recently had my first ever affiliated competition experienced, which felt like a good moment to talk you through how it works and how to try it for yourself! I referenced various pages on www.britishdressage.co.uk/ for this vlog and for education.

    Thank you, really helpful to look through the jargon. I'm honestly no where near doing dressage at the moment but I would never have considered affiliated as its too complicated. You just made it sound a whole lot simpler and a whole lot more inviting. It's something I would consider looking into now. 😊

    I can't speak to the UK but in the US I've scripted for judges a LOT and it's absolutely true. Partially because the judge has to have to have a higher level of training, partially to encourage lower level competitors.

    I don't think I could ever learn a dressage test, I can do showjumping courses with the physical landmarks in the arena but I struggle to remember more than 3-4 movements in lessons without getting lost when setting out an exercise!

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi 5 днів тому

      You’d be surprised! The letters help a lot and I tend to learn “shapes”. At the lower end of the tests you also find a lot of mirroring (eg if you do a 20 metre circle at E on one rein, you usually do it at B on the other) and you learn other patterns such as … free walk on a long rein tends to happen across a diagonal… and so on. It gets easier the more you do it!

    You handled his moments so well - I love how you firmly told him what was acceptable behaviour and what wasn't, but like you said it came from a place without emotion. It's so easy to get emotional with horses and their training - I'm learning to set boundaries without emotion getting involved for my yearling at the moment. Thank you for sharing with us - you both have come so far ❤

    Keep going, any one of us who have had several young horses over the years recognises that awful phase they go thru and quiet firm riding and total consistency always works. There is a reason as n eight year old is more money to buy than a five year old, someone else has dealt with that phase!!!

      I have backed my 4 year old 3/4 Irish draught gelding and he hasn’t put a foot wrong for 5 months until the other day and he bronked me off after we just walked away from the mounting block. He is 17.1 and it’s a long way down. The challenge is trusting them again at this age. I love him and I will work through it but at 58 years old I don’t know what I was thinking buying a 4 year old! I case anyone asks…he is in light hacking work a few times a week and schools for 20 minutes max. He has a saddle fitted to him/chiropractor and dentist. Thanks for sharing your ups and downs..it helps to see real life with a young horse. X

He's still so young and learning what's what and you teach him in such a good way. We always had a rule when he was younger that he was allowed to look, just not move off the line we’ve set - which helps reduce tension and get them comfortable. However, now it’s a big thing, we are doing similar to you, which my coach is describing in the video as “leg yield position”

    Thank you for sharing moments like this. You guys have already come on so much and I can't say how lovely it is to see a reality that most of us share. Even vicariously gaining experience from seeing you travel alone makes me want to brave it. I know the lesson wasn't perfect (and it isn't always!) that's just part of the reality as you so rightly say. Accept, move on, keep working at it gently. It's something I admire. It's lovely to find a supportive equestrian community like this. All the best x
